English as a Second Language

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at South Puget Sound Community College has six levels of classes to help non-native speakers of English improve their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Classes meet in the morning, afternoon and evening on the Main Campus in Olympia and at the Hawks Prairie Center in Lacey.

ESL classes cost $25 per quarter. Summer Quarter 2008 is June 23-August 15. ESL Entrance Tests are held before and during the quarter, and students can enter a Summer class any time between June 23 and July 11.

A World of Possibilities in ESL

While South Puget Sound Community College’s English as a Second Language Program is about learning, it is also about becoming part of something bigger. Each year, South Puget Sound ESL students produce “ESL Students Bring You the World,” a collection of writings on cultural traditions, folktales, immigration stories, and impressions of the United States. Writing the book gives the co-authors an experience to share with other non-native English speakers and allows them to add their stories to the larger narrative of American culture. In South Puget Sound’s ESL Program, you too can learn to share your experiences.
