ENGL 081 English Fundamentals I 5 Credits
Introducing the mechanics of writing to students who have not acquired a basic Standard English sentence writing background. Focuses on parts of a sentence and how they relate to basic paragraphing.  Prerequisite: Placement test and/or instructor's permission.

ENGL 091 Basic English I 5 Credits
A basic course to teach the student sentence analysis skills to construct correct simple sentences. Prerequisite: College placement test into ENGL 091 and above READ 091 (or take READ 091 in the same quarter as ENGL 091).

A basic course to teach the student sentence analysis skills to construct correct  compound and complex sentences and to recognize and revise incorrect and confusing sentences. Prerequisite: Pass ENGL 091 and READ 092 (or take READ 092 in the same quarter as ENGL 092).

ENGL 096 Basic Writing I 5 Credits
Advanced beginner's instruction and practice in the writing of grammatically accurate and varied sentences and in the developing of interesting, coherent, well supported, short essays. Prerequisite: College placement test into ENGL 096 and READ 096 (or pass ENGL 092 and READ 092).

ENGL 100 Intermediate Grammar 2.5 Credits
Focuses on elements of grammatical compound, complex, and compound/complex sentences and strategies for fitting these sentences together into unified and coherent paragraphs; covers punctuation and includes individual and group editing techniques, to help students be more independently successful in writing clear and complex prose for college-level courses across the disciplines. May be repeated for up to five credits. (Course runs five weeks and starts Week 1 and Week 6). Prerequisite: Placement in ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 which may be taken concurrently or by referral from developmental education.

ENGL& 101 English Composition I 5 Credits
Develops ability to think, speak, write and read effectively. Develops writing skills by focusing on strategies and techniques writers use to convey ideas and feelings, to make a point, and develops reading skills to enable them to participate in their community and the world at large. Emphasizes both the process and the product of writing. This course was formerly known as WRIT 101, College Writing I. Prerequisite: Placement test (reading and writing) or placement test (reading) and diagnostic writing sample, or successful completion of ENGL 097 and READ 097.

ENGL& 102 Composition II 5 Credits
Further develops students’ reading and writing skills at the advanced level.  Teaches how to write argumentative essays by conducting research, constructing and arguments, and using appropriate conventions.  Fosters an appreciation of an open attitude towards diverse points of view and the value of reasoned debate in a healthy community. This course was formerly known as WRIT 102, College Writing II. Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101, with a grade of "C" or better.

ENGL 250 American Ethnic Literature I 5 Credits
Focuses on the literary contributions of one or more ethnic groups in the United States. Students gain knowledge of themselves as readers with complex cultural identities. They also gain knowledge of literary texts by American ethnic writers as expressions that emerged from complex cultural, social, and historical circumstances and as opportunities to learn of experiences and cultures not their own and to encounter differing values.
