Interdisciplinary introduction to Latin American Studies which may include geography, culture, religion, politics, economics, literature, art, and music, representative ethnic groups and contemporary events. IIS 130 Introduction to East Asian Studies 5 Credits
Through an interdisciplinary approach this course will expand to the diverse ethnic and cultural world of East Asia. Topics of exploration include settlement and conflict, religious values and beliefs, colonization, economic power, political influence, and ethnic diversity. In an effort to understand major world events, both dominant and subordinate groups will receive equal consideration. The specific countries of our inquiry include China, Japan, the Korea's, Mongolia, and Taiwan. Specific countries and topics to be discussed will vary according to the expertise of the instructor and current events. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or concurrent enrollment.

IIS 131 Introduction to South & Southeast Asian Studies 5 Credits
Through an interdisciplinary approach, this course will expand, inform and expose students to the diverse ethnic and cultural world of South and Southeast Asia. Topics of exploration include ethnic diversity, settlement and conflict, religious values and beliefs, colonization, and economic power and influence. In an effort to understand major world events, both dominant and subordinate groups will receive equal consideration of their perspective. The specific countries of our enquiry include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka; Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore and Vietnam. Specific countries and topics to be discussed will very according to the expertise of the instructor and current events. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or concurrent enrollment.

IIS 145 Introduction to African Studies 5 Credits
Interdisciplinary study of sub-Saharan Africa from prehistory to the present. Emphasis on fostering an understanding of this complex and important region by exploring the major forces that have shaped and continue to shape sub-Saharan Africa. Students should be prepared to read and write at the college level. Prerequisite: None.

IIS 194 Study Abroad Program 5-15 Credits
Intended exclusively as "place-holding" credits for SPS students studying abroad at a sister college. Students may register for 5-15 IIS 194 credits (maximum of 5 credits of individual study); upon their return, transcript evaluations will replace the IIS credits with credit for courses taken at the sister college. Prerequisites: None.

IIS 210 International Cultural Studies 5 Credits
An in-depth interdisciplinary study of the life and culture(s) of one country or region of the world, with a focus on the relationship between the arts, history, religion, politic, and socio-economic conditions and cultural values and traditions in the region. Exploration of the role the culture has in the larger world and the political, cultural and economic issues that impact that role. (Specific culture of focus will change each quarter as selected by the instructor.) Prerequisite: None.

IIS 231 Organizational Communication 5 Credits
An interdisciplinary introduction to the theory and practice of communication processes in international organizational settings. Compares organizational cultures, systems, and networks and develops skills for communicating effectively in an international/intercultural workplace. Cultures of focus will be determined by instructor. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or instructor's permission.
