LIT 201 Women in Literature 5 credits
Explores women's poetry, essays, stories, journals and plays from at least three areas of the world. Develops strategies for reading, analysis, and interpretation. Prerequisite: Any one of the following: HUM 111, HUM 112, HUM 113, HUM 114, ENGL& 111, 112, 114 or LIT 180, 181, 182, ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or concurrently, or instructor's permission.

LIT 210 American Literature Survey 5 credits
American literature studied against the background of literary, cultural, political and social history.  Explores the relationship between growth of American society and emergence of American literature and develop their skills in literary analysis.  May focus on literary periods, distinctly American themes and genres, or the development of American culture and identity through gender, race, class and region. Prerequisite: "C" or higher in ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or instructor's permission.

LIT 211 American Ethnic Literature 5 credits
Focuses on the literary contributions of one or more ethnic groups in the United States.  Students gain knowledge of themselves as readers with complex cultural identities.  They also gain knowledge of literary texts by American ethnic writers as expressions that emerged from complex cultural, social, and historical circumstances and as opportunities to learn of experiences and cultures not their own and to encounter differing values. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or instructor's permission.

LIT 220 Introduction to Shakespeare 5 credits
Explores Shakespeare as a poet and dramatist of his time. Covers plays representing a varied selection of types and periods as well as non-dramatic poetry. Develops strategies for reading, analyzing, interpreting, and performing Shakespearean texts. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT101 or instructor's permission.

LIT 221 Introduction to Performance Shakespeare 5 credits
Introduces Shakespeare as a dramatist of his time. A performance-based course including full-scale productions of either a complete Shakespearean play or major scenes from two separate plays. Develops strategies for reading, analysis, interpretation and performing. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or instructor's permission, or ENGL& 101concurrently.

LIT 240 Contemporary World Literature 5 credits
Explores Twentieth century literature from three or more regions from the world. Develops tools for reading and analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating area works.  Prerequisite:  ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or instructor's permission, and recommend completion of one course in the ENGL& 111 series or LIT 180 series.

Explores Twentieth century literature in its social and cultural contexts from a designated area of the world. Develops tools for reading, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating area works. Prerequisite: ENGL& 101 or WRIT 101 or instructor's approval; completion of one course in the ENGL& 111 series or LIT 180 series is recommended.
